When thinking about what we could offer fans for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s final DLC pack, we knew we wanted to provide something special. So for DLC Vol. 3, not only will players encounter the fierce Yuan Shu — a half-demon warrior attempting to build a world full of evil fiends — but we’re also introducing a new Divine Beast to the mix that is unlike anything seen in our game! Experience the fox-like Chenghuang and all of its magical lifegiving powers in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty‘s third DLC pack, Upheaval in Jingxiang, available December 12 on the Xbox Store for Xbox Series X|S.
Chenghuang is a Divine Beast that is reminiscent of a white fox with horse-like legs and two appendages resembling dragon horns jutting out from its spine. There are various theories of the mythological creature’s origin: Some say the creature originated in Japan, and others theorize that its back humps are indicative of it being a camel. In its entry in the Huainanzi, a Chinese text from the Former Han period, it is equated with the divine horse Feihuang, the origin of the idiom “the divine steed Feihuang gallops,” which describes someone who achieves meteoric success in their career.
Whatever the origin, it’s a magnificent creature fitting the Wo Long mystique, not to mention, according to legend, it is able to live up to two thousand years!
In terms of gameplay, we were mindful of newness and impact when it comes to the action and performance fitting the last Divine Beast in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. One of the myths tells that riding a Chenghuang extends one’s life, which inspired the two keywords “riding” and “longevity”.
When the Divine Beast is summoned, the player rides on the back of Chenghuang and attacks the enemy by galloping around it. This is the first time in this game that a human and a Divine Beast are united in action, allowing the player to experience an unprecedented feeling of fighting together with the Divine Beast.
When it comes to design, by incorporating the majesty and sanctity of a Divine Beast that could be fitting for a wise and celebrated general, and the silhouette of a fox, along with the face of a fennec, we aimed to create a cute yet majestic design that is new in “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty”.
We were very particular in the way it looks, from the streamlined form of the beast, with its two horns on its back, to its huge tail, which gives it a silhouette that stands out when the player sits on it. We also made sure that it looks comfortable to ride.
And believe me, you’ll want to give it a ride as the Divine Beast also gains the effect of increasing maximum health for a certain period of time after being summoned, which, as the legend goes, allows the player to “live a long time”.
